Job Summary

Provide oversight of internships to the BUILD program, in conjunction with the program director, to ensure that students are able to successfully participate in and fulfill the requirements for a Certificate in Applied Studies.

With a focus on developing students' employment skills through internship work experiences, manage daily operations related to the Build program, including:

    Working with employers to arrange internships.
  • Developing and teaching BUILD courses related to the career development aspects of the program.
  • Hiring, training, and supervising job mentors.
  • Designing and implementing personalized learning process to track student progress in development of employment skills.

BUILD's mission is to provide students with intellectual disabilities a postsecondary, residential college experience, which is boldly influenced and motivated by the Christian faith, propelling students to confidently navigate their world with self-determination to live more independently, maintain meaningful employment, and value life in community with others. This integrated experience includes opportunities for academic, vocational, residential, social, and spiritual development.

Responsibilities
  • Teach BUILD courses related to the career development aspects of the program.
  • Coordinate all BUILD Program aspects related to internships including planning, developing, arranging of, and providing ongoing support to maintain internship sites.
  • Hire, train and supervise Job Mentors (student workers).
  • Collaborate with Director to manage all internship aspects to ensure that students are able to successfully participate in and fulfill the requirements for a Certificate in Applied Studies and prepare to enter into integrated employment.
  • Design personalized learning plans (PLP) for students, monitor progress for student advisees and participate in PLP meetings. Communicate with parent(s)/guardian(s) as appropriate regarding internships and student progress.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills
  • Ability to support Bethel University's statement of Christian faith and share that knowledge with students and clients.
  • Knowledge of characteristics of students with intellectual disabilities.
  • Ability to plan, develop, and implement curriculum and instruction using principles of Universal Design for Learning.
  • Knowledge of disability accommodations and supports required for students with intellectual disabilities in a postsecondary program.
  • Knowledge of community agencies and service groups focused on supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in developing their employment skills.
  • Ability to provide a supportive and caring environment for students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain open and cooperative communication with BUILD staff, students, parent(s)/guardian(s), and Bethel Community Members.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to hire, train, and manage student workers.
Experience

Required Experience:

  • 1+ years' experience teaching or working with students with disabilities required.

Preferred Experience:

  • 3+ years' experience teaching or working with students with disabilities and experience teaching and/or working at transition or college level experience preferred.
Education

Required Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field: Education, Leadership, Social Sciences, etc. required.

Preferred Education:

  • Work-based Learning licensure preferred.
Additional Information
  • Must be able work at a computer sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Ability to lift up to twenty pounds to transport instructional materials to classroom/work setting.
  • Position requires some night or weekend engagements as well as access to transportation to get to work sites.
