Job Summary
THIS POSITION BEGINS AUGUST 9, 2024.
The person in this position is responsible for instructing students in various American Sign Language courses for university transfer, interpreting certification, personal interest and other related courses for Deaf Studies including. This position instructs, advises, and evaluates students from diverse backgrounds/cultures in American Sign Language. Job duties entail working within a community college environment, taking an active role in curriculum development and course development, assisting with supervision and class scheduling, and working with local and statewide organizations and local high schools for recruitment and internships.
Essential Functions
Instructing students in ASL courses, with an emphasis on developing the students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This includes utilizing and assessing various teaching methods to promote effective learning in students with diverse abilities, levels of academic preparation, ages, and socio-economic/cultural backgrounds
Developing instructional materials. This includes creating syllabi/class outlines and evaluating students' comprehension of the subject matter being taught by making and grading assignments, projects, quizzes, and exams
Holding academic support hours for students, with the purpose of answering questions that students may have over the subject matters being taught and/or providing academic advisement to students planning to major in an ASL
Assists and responds to problems/requests from students during in person office hours. Serves on collaborative work teams with faculty, staff, administration and community stake holders, keeps department hours of accountability
Assisting in departmental efforts to build and maintain the ASL program at GCC. This requires a commitment to student success and working together with other GCC employees on student recruitment initiatives and community outreach efforts. This includes working with students; facilitating partnerships with in-state colleges and universities for transfer programs and potential grants; creating and maintaining partnerships within the deaf and hard of hearing community
Remains current with new trends and developments in the field through attendance at conferences, seminars, workshops. Is active within the community; engages in the academic life of the college by participating in district-wide, campus and departmental activities including department meetings, assessment, committees, and projects
Supervises and evaluates in American Sign Language Dual Enrollment courses
Engages in professional growth opportunities to enhance subject knowledge and develop pedagogical skills. ASL faculty members are expected to model the profession's high standards through their commitment to excellence, innovation, integrity, and teamwork. Professional growth opportunities may be external, such as attending national or regional conferences, or internal, such as attending college or department training sessions
Minimum Qualifications
What is required to teach in this program?
You need 5 years of occupational experience in the following fields:
American Sign Language, ASL Linguistics, Deaf Culture, Introduction to Deaf Community, Deaf Studies.
OR you will need 3 years of occupational experience in the following fields as well as a Bachelor's Degree in any field:
American Sign Language, ASL Linguistics, Deaf Culture, Introduction to Deaf Community, Deaf Studies.
OR you will need Master's Degree or higher in the following fields:
American Sign Language, ASL Linguistics, Deaf Culture, Introduction to Deaf Community, Deaf Studies.
OR you will need Master's Degree or higher in any field and 18 graduate-level credits OR 24 upper division undergraduate credit in the following fields or courses:
Coursework that includes:
ASL Teaching, ASL Pedagogy, ASL Linguistics, Deaf Culture, Sign Language Education, Comparative Linguistics, Deaf Studies, Teaching ASL
And in these areas:
ASL, TASL, DST, ITP, IPP, LIN
Desired Qualifications
Master degree in American Sign Language or ASL/English interpreting, or Deaf Studies
Professional certification in ASLTA, RID, CDE, CI/CT, or NIC.
Experience teaching American Sign Language
Two or more years of experience in classroom instruction using different modalities, preferably using innovative active learning methodologies
Native or near-native proficiency in American Sign Language with demonstrated ability to converse fluently in high level professional and academic conversation in ASL.
Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.
Experience using Learning Management Systems such as Blackboard or Canvas
Special Working Conditions
Possession of a valid State of Arizona Class D driver's license is required; must meet minimum standards regarding driving: http://www.maricopa.edu/legal/rmi/vehicle.htm#requirements
Travel to campus during interview/selection process will be at candidate's own expense
Will be required to travel or be assigned to all MCCCD locations
May require numerous evenings or weekends
May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen
