Job Title: Project Engineer

Summary

Reporting to the Director of Plant & Sustainability Engineering, the Project Engineer is responsible for three primary focus areas:

  • Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction, efficiency, and reliability projects to help Cordia reach its sustainability goals.
  • Engineering related support functions to Cordia's existing District Energy and CHP facilities.
  • Define and deliver CapEx Projects in support of the Regional managers and plant engineers.

General duties include working with strategic partners to implement the next generation of energy production, control, and distribution technologies.

This individual will be responsible for coordinating technical due diligence required for new projects; developing conceptual designs for new, replacement or expanded equipment and systems; development of project budgets and schedules; and providing other technical support as requested by the Engineering and Plant Operations teams.

Periodically, this person will serve as Owner's Project Manager through completion of final design and construction of new projects.

Principle Responsibilities/Key Results Areas

  • Assist Director of Plant & Sustainability Engineering with evaluation and analysis of GHG reduction technologies for deployment across the Cordia district energy plant portfolio.
  • Support Regional General Managers, in conjunction with the Plant Engineers, in developing and executing approved GHG reduction, efficiency, and reliability projects.
  • Support plants with design and construction of approved capital and major maintenance projects.
  • Maintain ownership of budget, schedule, and design and construction contracts.
  • Support Plant Managers and Plant Engineers with review of proposed major repairs and capital improvements for application of proper engineering methods and standards.
  • Support Plant Managers and Plant Engineers in analyzing operational issues and identifying potential improvements and system efficiency optimization.
  • Assist Plant Managers and Plant Engineers in developing plans and budgets for district energy system capacity and distribution expansions required to serve additional customer load.
  • Complete hydraulic modeling to evaluate distribution piping system capacity and expansion routing options.
  • Technical support in annual development of 10-year Capital Expenditure and Major Maintenance plans.
  • Key responsibilities include:
    • Lead technical due diligence.
    • Prepare equipment specifications.
    • Prepare project cost estimates.
    • Work with equipment/system vendors and engineering consultants to develop projects.
    • Develop project of scopes of work and Basis of Design (BOD).
    • Lead solicitation of proposals and selection of consulting engineers for feasibility studies and preliminary engineering.
    • Run performance models to evaluate expected performance characteristics for selected technologies.
    • Support development of project financial modeling.
    • Visit plant sites as needed to assist on-site as required. -
    • Visit subcontractors and suppliers to monitor progress and quality as required.
    • Support project closeout.

Requirements

Experience and Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.
  • Preference will be given to candidates located in the metropolitan areas of, Pittsburgh, Omaha, Minneapolis or Phoenix.
  • 7+ years of experience working in one or more aspects of the design, construction and/or operation of utility, industrial or institutional projects.
  • 2+ years of experience serving as lead project or construction manager in the design and construction of utility, industrial or institutional projects.
  • Direct experience in the areas of district energy, combined heat and power (CHP), central utility plants, and utility distributions systems a plus.
  • Direct experience with GHG reduction technologies such as geo-exchange, heat pumps, heat recovery, thermal storage, and hydrogen a plus.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) preferred, but not required.
  • CEM, LEED NC or LEED O&M certification a plus.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Capable of contributing in a team environment with site personnel as well as third party contractors.
  • The ability to work independently and make decisions independently, as required.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with site management, site supervisors, engineering staff, and regional management.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products including Microsoft Project and SharePoint.
  • Experience with computer-based construction cost estimating software preferred.
  • Experience with NetSuite ERP system preferred.
