Job Summary

Instructs, supervises, advises, and evaluates students from diverse college and high school populations in automotive classroom and lab settings that include, but not limited to, courses in automotive maintenance, engine repair, suspension & steering, manual drive train & axles, electrical/electronics, HVAC, automatic transmission, engine performance and brakes. Research, develop, and implement automotive curricula changes and course schedules. Actively participate in developing, updating and implementing procedures for sharing learning resources. Work with local and statewide repair shops and dealerships, and local high schools for recruitment and internships.

Essential Functions
  • Instructing students automotive courses, with an emphasis on developing the students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This includes utilizing and assessing various teaching methods to promote effective learning in students with diverse abilities, levels of academic preparation, ages, and socio-economic/cultural backgrounds.
  • Developing instructional materials. This includes creating syllabi/class outlines and evaluating students' comprehension of the subject matter being taught by making and grading assignments, projects, quizzes, and exams.
  • Holding academic support hours for students, with the purpose of answering questions that students may have over the subject matters being taught and/or providing academic advisement to students planning to major in an automotive discipline
  • Assisting in departmental efforts to build and maintain the automotive program at GCC. This requires a commitment to student success and working together with other GCC employees on student recruitment initiatives and community outreach efforts. This includes advising automotive students; facilitating partnerships with in-state universities for transfer programs and grants; participating in outreach activities to middle schools, high schools, and other programs; creating and maintaining partnerships within automotive industry
  • Engaging in professional growth opportunities to enhance subject knowledge and develop pedagogical skills. Automotive faculty members are expected to model the profession's high standards through their commitment to excellence, innovation, integrity, and teamwork. Thus, it is necessary for all automotive faculty within the department to work together and keep their knowledge up to date to assure the students within the program are learning the newest skills expected of automotive graduates. Professional growth opportunities may be external, such as attending national or regional conferences, or internal, such as attending college or department training sessions.


Minimum Qualifications
  • A master's degree in the teaching field, OR
  • A master's in any teaching field with 24 graduate semester hours in the teaching field, OR
  • A bachelor's degree plus 3 years work experience in the field to be taught, OR
  • An associate's degree or 64 semester hours and 5 years work experience in the field to be taught, or 5 years work experience in the field to be taught,
  • ASE certified

What is required to teach in this program?

You need 5 years of occupational experience in the following fields: Automotive, Diesel, Automotive Engineering

OR you will need 3 years of occupational experience in the following fields as well as a Bechelor's Degree in any field: Automotive, Diesel, Automotive Engineering

OR you will need a Master's Degree or higher in any field and 24 upper division undergraduate classes in the dollowing fields or courses: Coursework that includes: Automotive, Diesel, Electric Vehicle, Hybrid, Engine Performance, Drivetrain, Heating and Air Conditioning, NASCAR, Autonomous Vehicles, Motorsports

Desired Qualifications

A. ASE Master Certification with advanced level 1 in Engine Performance (L1) and (G1) Maintenance and Light Repair (MLR) (to be listed on resume or cover letter)

B. Recent automotive teaching and curriculum experience at the community college or high school level.

C. Experience working in educational environments, including non-traditional settings that require professionalism, flexibility, excellent communication and interpersonal skills

D. Recent (within the last 4 years) updated training history with an automotive manufacturer. (to be listed on resume or cover letter

E. Associates Degree in Automotive or related areas; Industrial Management, Engineering, Welding, Diesel Technology, Aircraft Maintenance.

Special Working Conditions
  • Possession of a valid State of Arizona Class D driver's license is required; must meet minimum standards regarding driving:
  • Travel to campus during interview/selection process will be at candidate's own expense
  • Will be required to travel or be assigned to all MCCCD locations
  • May require numerous evenings or weekends
  • May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen
  • May be required to lift or carry up to #25 lbs
