Job Details:

The Molecular Cardiology Research Institute, Tufts Medical Center, Boston, invites Research Associate applications for a position in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Chin. The Chin laboratory investigates how epigenetic, genetic and transcriptional programs alter the functioning of the cardiovascular cell and predispose to disease, and focuses on identifying and developing avenues for therapy. The lab studies the pathogenesis of Barth Syndrome and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Associate who will utilize molecular biology, biochemistry and physiology to study the pathogenesis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and heart failure and/or develop enzyme replacement therapy for Barth Syndrome. Special emphasis on molecular cloning, protein purification, cell culture and Crispr targeting, genomics, LC-MS, use of transgenic mouse models to identify transcriptional, signaling and metabolic networks in cardiac muscle cells and fibroblasts.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Work as part of one or more project teams, and remain proficient in designing, managing and performing experiments.
  • Collect and analyze data, and deliver experimental research reports when necessary with guidance from the PIs for collaborative research projects.
  • With guidance from the PI, produce scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and present research data in house and in scientific conferences.
  • Write as well as assist in the preparation of applications for external grants for research and fellowships. May apply and obtain grants as PI in accordance with the Medical Centers PI Guidance.
  • Assist in general lab organization and maintenance, supply ordering and liaising with infrastructure departments.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops. Attends meetings as required.
  • Trains new staff and serves as a resource to other lab members, including graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and other technical staff.
  • Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working groups achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.
Job Qualifications:

JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Strong knowledge of and experience in molecular or cellular biology techniques, and proteinpurification required
  • Experience with handling of precious clinical samples, small animal handling, small animal echocardiography and histology helpful but not essential
  • Experience with proteomics, metabolomics, genomics, pharmacology or toxicology a plus
  • Ideal candidate is highly self-motivated, creative, dedicated, enjoys scientific discovery with the ability to function independently
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills are essential

EDUCATION:

  • Minimum of M.S. in biochemistry, cell biology, microbiology, or bioscience degree program. M.D. or Ph.D. preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

Two or more years research experience acquired through a postdoctoral fellowship or technical position in an academic or biomedical industry setting.

An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Normal laboratory environment. May be exposed to radioactivity, chemicals used in DNA, PCR technology and protein electrophoresis, biohazardous material, and replication deficient adenoviruses, under controlled conditions in accordance with institutional safety standard requirements.
